Victorian Official Fare Evasion Series: October 2012

Fare evasion surveys are conducted by PTV in May and October each year to measure the rate of fare evasion on the public transport network. The October 2012 fare evasion survey covered the three metropolitan modes of train, tram and bus, and for the first time, fare evasion rates were also measured on V/Line train services.

On metropolitan train, the fare evasion rate has declined from 11.7 per cent in May 2012 to 8.8 per cent in October 2012, returning to a level similar to that seen in October 2011 (8.5 per cent).

On metropolitan tram, the fare evasion rate shows a continuing decline from 18.4 per cent in October 2011 to 10.5 per cent in October 2012.

The fare evasion rate on metropolitan bus has gradually increased over the previous two surveys from 7.6 per cent in October 2011 to 9.1 per cent in October 2012.

The first fare evasion survey on V/Line trains showed a lower rate of fare evasion (4.5 per cent) than on the metropolitan network (9.4 per cent).

Melbourne Public Transport Patronage Long Run Series

Despite peaks and troughs over the past 64 years, the number of trips taken by passengers on Melbourne’s public transport network is increasing.

The Melbourne Public Transport Patronage Long Run Series report examines patronage on metropolitan trains, trams and buses since the end of the Second World War (1946-47 to 2010-11).

Patronage is the number of trips taken on public transport. A single passenger journey may consist of multiple trips. For example, a person’s journey to work may involve a bus and a train trip. These trips are counted separately to calculate the level of activity on each mode in patronage estimates.

PTV Market Intelligence Report, Bus Patronage Data to December 2011

New research shows that the number of passenger trips on Melbourne buses has risen by more than 15 per cent. In the year ended December 2011, an additional 15.3 million bus trips were taken in Melbourne - a total of more than 117 million trips.

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) research shows the increase in patronage is a result of new bus routes, route upgrades, population and employment growth in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, as well as the strategy and investment focused on routes 401 and 601, SmartBus and Doncaster Area Rapid Transit (DART).
