Notes:
- Bus includes metropolitan school bus services.
- Growth figures for 2004-05 by modes and 2005-06 for all modes are estimates arrived at jointly by Public Transport Victoria and the operators. They are not derived from the previous years’ patronage figures because of the change in measurement methodology described in point 3 below.
- Patronage estimates for the three metropolitan modes were estimated using a different methodology from 2004-05. This change in methodology means a step-change in patronage estimates from 2003-04 to 2004-05 for train and tram and 2004-05 to 2005-06 for bus. This needs to be considered when comparing estimates across years.
- Figures exclude additional patronage associated with the Commonwealth Games.
- From 2009-10, patronage growth rates have been adjusted for calendar effects. The calendar effect adjustment results in a more accurate measure of the underlying growth rate by removing the effect that differing numbers of school holidays, weekends and public holidays may have on the apparent growth rate.
The dashed line denotes the break in series.

Notes:
- Includes V/Line, Hoys and West Coast Railways patronage until operation of the latter two was assumed by V/Line on 1 July 2004 and 1 September 2004 respectively. The figures do not include Great Southern Railway 'Overland' or CountryLink 'XPT' patronage.
- Represents 'rail replacement' coach services provided following the closure of specific railway lines in the 1970s plus V/Line marketed or Public Transport Victoria marketed coach services provided by private operators and marketed under the V/Line banner.
- Figures from 1998-99 to 2006-07 are based on 'country and urban' figures reported in the Public Transport Victoria/ Department of Infrastructure annual reports, less V/Line marketed coach patronage wich is included in regional coach figures.
