Calder Park Stabling Facility
Public Transport Victoria has completed site investigations at Calder Park to confirm that the land is suitable for a stabling yard facility.
The investigations included an assessment of flora and fauna, any waterways through the site, traffic issues, planning issues and the visual impact of the project.
Investigations did not identify any significant environmental or planning issues of interest under Victorian legislation that would prevent the establishment of a new train stabling and maintenance facility on the land.
One of the next steps in the process requires that PTV must also finalise environmental approvals under Commonwealth legislation. Further information on this aspect is provided below.
Commonwealth environmental approvals
PTV has been completing investigations to confirm that the Calder Park site is suitable for a train stabling facility. In June last year PTV commenced the Commonwealth government environmental approvals process under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act). The Commonwealth determined that the project is a 'controlled action' and required PTV provide further information on the environment in the area before a final decision on the project is made.
PTV have now finalised the reports in response to the Commonwealth's request. These documents are now on public exhibition as part of the assessment process. Below is the formal notice of the public exhibition period as advertised in the Herald Sun, Melton Leader and Brimbank Leader on Tuesday 12 March. Also below are the approval documents for your review.

A new train stabling and possible future maintenance facility is proposed at Calder Park to help increase and maintain the frequency and reliability of Melbourne's trains, particularly on the Sunbury line.
Providing extra stabling at Calder Park will ensure that trains are stored and maintained in modern facilities in one location, improving the efficiency, capacity and reliability along the Sydenham-Sunbury rail line.
Stage 1 will be the construction of stabling facilities for seven trains at Calder Park. There will also be an amenities building for train drivers and maintenance staff, an upgraded power substation, CCTV, lighting and security system.
The new train stabling and future maintenance facility works will ensure that:
- trains can be stored at Calder Park, improving the efficiency of the Sunbury line
- the maintenance and daily cleaning of Melbourne's metropolitan train fleet will be more efficient
- in conjunction with eight other stabling sites around Melbourne, the capacity of the entire rail network can progressively be improved.
